Star Burst
Here is a little treat for you, a mystery quilt which would look great in a variety of colours, particularly quite strong colours as I have used, but you are all so good at choosing colours you may have some different ideas!
This is meant to be a fun project and will run over six months.
The quilt will look fabulous draped over the couch or on the wall for a little extra decor, or just to use for a much needed nap!
This is a pieced quilt, some of the pieces are quite small but manageable.
I have used some delicious rich marbled fabrics from japan.
When you choose your fabrics I suggest you choose a main colour and find 12 different colours that will contrast with it. It would look terrific in hand-dyes, batiks, etc.
If you are wanting to use similar fabrics to those I have used, we have the main fabric available on the Susan-Claire website.

How it works
I will post the new parts (hopefully) on the 1st of each month, starting in March ’10 and finishing in August ’10, as the new part comes up, the previous part will come down and will then be available to purchase on-line.
The pattern is available free on-line, during the specified time, but I would ask that you do not distribute it or copy it without my permission, please. However, please do tell all your friends so they can join in the fun. If you have missed some parts then you will be able to purchase them for US$3 per part on-line. I would love to hear from you as to how you are getting on with it, and would love to see some pictures when you have finished it.
This idea worked so well last year that I thought it would be fun to do another mystery. The computer still baffles me somewhat but with some very helpful helpers we seem to be getting there. Please let me know if there are any problems.
have fun!
I love to get feed-back and many of you have told me how you are enjoying this mystery, thank you. Maybe you have some thoughts on what you would like next in a mystery? Leave me a comment on www.GourmetQuilter.com or send me an email at susanclaire@gourmetquilter.com and tell me what you would like, things like more appliqué, larger quilt, smaller quilt, Christmas, kids or some other theme. How often would you like a mystery? Do you like the monthly part system, or would you like a quick concentrated mystery to do over a weekend maybe?
Whatever your thoughts, please let me know.

It all sounds very exciting, Susan. I love the vibrant colours you’ve chosen. Guess I won’t be able to resist joining in – will look through my assorted hand dyes and see whether I can utilise them, though they’re not fat quarters. Would several shades of each colour (to make up the fat quarter) work for the whole quilt? I can see that they would for Step 1. Thanks for the opportunity to discover another great (I’m sure) design.
I would – quite like to take part in this exercise- BUT – would like to use some of my current stash.
Would it be POSSIBLE to purchase some of the main fabrics through you and use the balance from the stash…….
?
your advice would be appreciated.
donna
Hi Susan-Claire
I have just downloaded Part One of Star Burst, your new on-line mystery Quilt. Could you please confirm that the final size of the block is 8½ inches (8 inches finished)
Thanks
Liz
hi everyone, thanks for looking at Star Burst, A mistake has been dicovered in the cutting, the strips should be 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ for the main colour. My apologies to all and the download is being fixed now. Susan-Claire
Hi Jean, yes, I think you can use shades of the same colour. It will be best if the colours remain fairly distinct. good luck and let me know how you are going. Susan-Claire
Hi Liz, yes the block should measure 8 1/2″ (8″ finished). Susan-Claire
Hi Donna-Marie, thanks for the interest. Yes it is possible to get some of the fabrics from me and use some of your stash too, great idea. I have put all the fabrics together in a group on the site, but they are available individually as well. Susan Claire
Hi
I have had a great time doing two of your mysteries last year (one in Wellington and Star Struck) and am so glad you are doing another one this year. I am really looking forward to the journey, thank you for sharing.
Jennifer
thanks Jenny, hope you enjoy it, I love a good mystery! Susan-Claire
Great! I really enjoyed the mystery quilt we did in time for christmas, so have been watchingout for a new one from you.
Am looking forward to doing it.
Thanks for the great looking mystery. Can’t wait to get started.
I’d love to join you and do this project but I do have one question. I have a bunch of fat quarters in very bright and distinct colors, but they are floral prints, not tone on tones. Do you think that would work for this.

Hi Karen, thanks for joining in. I have a preference for plainer colours myself, but I can’t see why your florals wouldn’t work for you. Some pieces will be quite small so the pattern may be lost, but it is colour that is the most important. I will be interested to see what it looks like whn you have done it! Susan-Claire
It’s the color I’m thinking of anad I’m not concerned if the patterns get lost. But the colors are so vibrant, I just love them and thought maybe this would work. I’ll try and get some photos if you want to see them – I could send them to you privately if you wish. Are any of your older mysteries still available?

Hello Susan I joined in on the star struck mystry last year and it turned out very well.I used lots from my stash, I got lots of compliments at my quilt class when I showed off the finished quilt, so I am with you on this one too.The colors are out of my comfort zone! but I am going with it. Hope I get to Birmingham again this year

Loved doing your mystery quilt last year…looking forward to doing this one. I am trying to get my fabrics together and have a question. I plan to use marbled fabrics like you’re using and have a dark main fabric (blackish) like you have. The question is this…I only have 3 yards of it and am wondering if it will be enough. It was bought several years ago, and I can’t get anymore of it. Will I be able to use it? Thanks for doing these mysteries…lots of work and much appreciated.

I finished part 2 today, and looking forward to part 3. I like it very well until now and think it will be a nice product. Thank you for sharing with us.
J’ai vu votre panneau de poupées japonaises sur Quiltmania et je le trouve magnifique. Pourriez-vous m’indiquer, s’il vous plait, où trouver ce beau tissu gris de fond ?
Merci d’avance et bravo,
Idanile.
Looking forward to the beginning of June!
Finished March, April and May and just loving this Mystery… where is this quilt going? what’s next I wonder… it certainly is full of Mystery

Hello,
I don’t speak English very well but I find your patch “les poupées japonaises” splendid and I wish realise it. Could you tell me where I can find furnitures in Belgium to realise this patch . Thank you.
Thank you for liking my Japanese Doll quilt. I am sorry, I don’t know where you can get fabrics in Belgium. Can I help some more?
hi susan claire,
can you tell me how i can purchase your japanese dollquilt pattern
hi lyn, it is in the shop site here https://www.susanclaire.com/range.jsp?Range=1
Susan, I love the idea of a mystery quilt but I have to admit I am not really thrilled with all the small pieces in this quilt. To be fair, you did warn us ahead of time.
I would love to do another mystery quilt over 3 to 6 months and I love applique. Thanks for sharing this pattern.
Sandra
Hi Sandra, sorry about the small bits! Thanks for persevering, I hope you will like the end result.
I am really enjoying this mystery. Thank you.
At the end of part 4 you show a picture of the pieces that we should have left. Are we to use the 2 1/2 colored squares from those that are left or are we to cut more of them for part 5?
I would like to do another pieced mystery with clues every two weeks. A Christmas quilt would be nice.
Hi Susan-Claire, I am enjoying making the Star Burst mystery quilt.Could the next one be longer, so it would fit on top of a single bed.
I would like to do a childs quilt, in brights, and some applique would be nice.
I made last years Star Burst quilt, and my mother has got it on her bed.
Lynette, Gore, NZ

Wow, Susan-Claire, I have just looked at part 6 and the finished quilt is just wonderful, it fair sparkles. Love It, thank you so much.
Just love the finished quilt Susan-Claire… Wonderful, must try and find time to do this part 6 before Saturday so I can show all the SCQuilters at the Blue Gum.
Thanks again, cheers Pennie
What a beutiful quilt.
Now I´m ready to start with the last part, part 5 was finished today.
Thank you so much for the mystery.
Hi Susan,
Have just finished the Star Burst quilt.
Its looks spectacular, and one of our burmese cats thought so too.
He took a flying leap at it on my design wall and ripped holes in two of the coloured squares in the third round, which I had to replace.
Thank you,
Lynette
I´m finished, you can see it here http://ritashandarbeid.blogspot.com/2010/08/teppet-er-ferdig.html
