Metro Tiles: From Liberty of London to an Appliqué Quilt.

There's been a little appliqué preparation happening on my sewing table this week. I always enjoy this stage of a project — choosing the fabrics, cutting the shapes and watching an idea begin to emerge. I'm not going to show you quite what these pieces are becoming just yet, but they did get me thinking about appliqué and some of the many appliqué projects I've designed over the years.
One of those projects is Metro Tiles, a quilt that actually began with a visit to Liberty of London. I spotted some beautiful decorative tiles there and loved the way the individual designs worked together as a collection.
Those tiles stayed in my mind and eventually became Metro Tiles — 50 different appliqué "tiles", made block by block using a quilt-as-you-go method, with fabric "grouting" added over the joins.
Rather appropriately, although the original quilt was made in Hoffman batiks, I eventually made another version using Liberty quilting cottons — bringing the idea rather nicely back to where it began! look what fabric choice can do to one pattern.
